Our Statement on Affirmative Action

As a Christ-centered and Black-serving organization, the Witness Inc. recognizes the critical importance of affirmative action in advancing racial equity and empowering Black Americans. Affirmative action policies have played a vital role in addressing the deeply rooted historic and systemic racism that hinders access to higher education for people of color. We know that these policies provided essential frameworks for creating more equitable opportunities for all.

The recent rulings announced by the U.S. Supreme Court regarding affirmative action undermine the progress we have made in fostering access to equitable opportunities. In this pivotal moment, we reaffirm our steadfast commitment to fighting for racial equity and equal access to education for all students. We stand in solidarity with students, advocates, colleges, and universities who recognize the importance of policies that enable students of color to overcome historical disadvantages and succeed in higher education. The urgency to ensure that everyone, regardless of their background, has a fair chance at a high-quality education has never been greater.

It is disheartening to witness the attacks on affirmative action and other racial equity practices and policies that are taking place in our society. However, 2nd Timothy 2:3 reminds us to endure hardship as good soldiers. We will endure, and we will keep fighting, just as our ancestors did.

While the recent rulings present significant obstacles, we will persist in our mission to equip Black Christians to flourish. We will continue to collaborate with organizations and individuals who share our vision for a more equitable society, leveraging our resources and influence to advance racial justice. We will remain agile in our educational and philanthropic endeavors to meet the needs that will arise as a result of this ruling. Together, we will overcome and work towards a future where all people of color can access the educational opportunities they need to Flourish.

Christin Thorpe, President.
